Interview

I is for Interview.

Have you experienced a job interview?  Have you ever felt you could have prepared more for a job interview?

There are 3 main job interview types:

  1. The phone screen; generally this is where a human resource rep will ask you questions, such as how you heard about the position, what experience you have that would be a fit for the position, your strengths, your weaknesses, and why you are the right candidate for the position.

  2. The in-person interview type, which can be a one-on-one in an office or conference room, or a one to many, typically held in a conference room.

  3. Depending on the proximity of the employees at a company, you may also have a video-conference interview, which can be held at your home or a local office of the prospective employer. I encountered this exact interview type with a company with operations in Milan, Italy and Houston, Texas, where the interviewer was unable to make it to Houston because of volcano ash in the atmosphere, was interrupting thousands of flights in and around Europe. So, I flew from Akron, Ohio to Houston, Texas to interview in person with a sales manager and did the video-conference interview with the director in Milan, Italy. It was wild, but I gained so much from that experience. Was I nervous? Of course I was, but my confidence and determination took precedence over my nervousness. I took this experience as a positive and not a setback. You can do the same. Believe in yourself and the interview team will believe in you!

Always have copies of your cover letter (if applicable), and resume to distribute to your interviewers.  Your career services department should be able to help you craft your cover letter and resume.  If not, please reach out directly to me and I will.  Remember to use your resources!

Lastly, you will want to have a portfolio with work and or school samples to show during the interview.  I will now pass around my portfolio for you to take a look at.

Don’t fear the interview and the interview process, embrace it and knock it out of the park!  Remember that nobody knows you, your skills, education and experience more than you.  Be confident in your skills, education and experience.  You are the right person for the job!
