Use Your Resources
As a student, you are privy to a host of resources to support and guide your career readiness, that are included in your tuition, of which some could end up costing you hundreds of dollars once outside of school.
Some examples of resources you should look into and use are:
1. Teachers – Teachers are great because they not only teach courses, but have additional experience that could help you hone in on, or eliminate a career path. Furthermore, teachers may even be willing to write you a letter of recommendation for a job application. I know I have.
2. Advisers – Much the same as your teachers. You would be surprised what you can gain if you just take the step to ask.
3. Mentors – Mentors are individuals that volunteer their time to answer questions, share their experience or may just be a sounding board you can speak with, to confirm that you are doing all you can to succeed. For example, mentors can be a teacher, a coach, a family friend, or a connection on LinkedIn. Again, what a great tool to have in your toolbox.
Speaking for myself, asking for guidance and help was the toughest thing to do because when I was a student, I thought I knew everything and those tools wouldn’t be helpful. Boy was I wrong. Don’t be bashful or ego struck. Everyone needs some help sometimes, so why not ask for help when a couple of questions can help clear up what career path may be best suited for you?
So, why is it important to use your resources offered at your college/university? Cost and proximity; meaning resources available to current students and alumni are free (included in the cost of your tuition) you won’t have to travel far, and since these resources are close in proximity, they are often able to work in unison and communicate with each other, which can be a force multiplier.
